Istanbul, Turkey

I had the opportunity to experience the new nonstop on Turkish Air from Los Angeles directly to Istanbul. Normally a 14 hr flight we arrived early in less than 13 hrs. The service at the airport and in the air is excellent! The planes are new and they have four comfortable classes of service.

When I arrived in Istanbul I realized immediately that it is much more cosmopolitan than I recalled. It is a city that definitely requires a good guide in order to fully appreciate the history, architecture and culture. The history goes back so far and through many civilizations, rulers and Sultans that you need someone to help you understand what you are experiencing and from which century.

My favorite palace was Topkapi Palace, it was the residence of the Sultans for almost three centuries. The palace was also the seat of  government for the Ottoman Empire. Located on the promontory jutting out between the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn and completed in 1478. It was the imperial residence of many sultans, his court and his harem. The Harem living quarters and the years of colorful history fascinated me and my guide shared many stories that are not in guide books!!

There are many great hotels, restaurants, activities, bazaars, museums and historical buildings to see and you will need make time to take a private cruise on the Bosphorous. Try to stay a little longer in Istanbul that just a couple of days. Istanbul is on the top of my list for European cities and I plan to go back soon. I am happy to share with you my experiences, guides and opinions.
